History of Canalside Studios

Canalside Studios was founded by the University of Huddersfield in 2006 and takes its name from the building where the Studio is based.

The Studio enjoyed massive early success when, in 2007, students were awarded second place in Microsoft's inaugural Dream Build Play with their game, "Yo-Ho Kablammo". Seeing off competition from over 3,600 entrants, the Team took home a game development contract with Microsoft. Once "Yo-Ho Kablammo" was completed, it was released on Microsoft's Xbox LIVE Arcade marketplace to give gamers a first taste of the Canalside Studios experience.

Barely a year later, a member of the Studio picked up the prestigious Imagine Cup award in Games Design at Microsoft UK for their game "Drizzle"; this unique environmental game is available on PC and Xbox 360. The Studio has built on its early success and has gone on to win multiple competitions including prizes at Microsoft's X48 event and most recently in the Game Republic Showcase competition. The Studio has also worked in partnership with the Royal Armouries in Leeds to create educational games for use at the museum.

The most recent Xbox game released is "Missing Reel", a B-movie themed twin-stick shooter that is available on Xbox LIVE Indie channel.

The Studio has released titles on both iPhone and Android and has previously worked with the West Yorkshire Fire Service on a driving simulator.
